PC's have been around since before the video game console era and have always been stuck, firmly in the market. The time period I am talking about is when the first video games appeared on PC's (such as Spacewar!), not when the first PC was made. In this post, I will talk about two of the biggest companies for making PC's as well as the biggest company for downloading games on to PC's. Finally, I will be talking about 3 of the biggest and best games on the platform.

Platforms:

Windows:
Windows 1.0 was designed in September 1981 by Chase Bishop. It was announced in November 1983 but was not released until November 1985. Its original components included: Calculator, Calendar, Cardfile, Clipboard viewer, Clock, Control Panel, Notepad, Paint, Reversi, Terminal and Write. Many different versions of Windows have been released since and our current version is 8.1.

Mac:
The Macintosh 128k was the first mass market personal computer that featured a graphical user and a mouse. It was introduced by Steve Jobs on January 24, 1984. The project began in 1979 when Jef Raskin (an Apple employee) envisioned a low cost, easy to use computer. The name originated from Raskin's favourite type of apple, Mclinstosh, but after early users kept misspelling it, it was changed to Macintosh. Jef Raskin hired Bill Atkinson, an engineer in Apple's Lisa team, as well as man other people in order to design the Macintosh. Eventually they made, the Apple II which caught the attention of Steve Jobs. Raskin, left the team in 1981 after personality disputes with Jobs. Many more Macintosh's have been released with the current operating system being OS Mavericks.

Steam:
Steam was created as Valve was struggling to release updates for its games, such as Counter Strike, where, when a patch was downloaded, the server would shut down. Valve decided to make a platform that would enable better anti cheating and anti-piracy measures. To do this, they went and approached several companies including Microsoft, Yahoo! and RealNetworks but they all turned them down. The official release happened in 2003 while the Steam Community launched in 2007. Steam was available on Mac as of May 12, 2010, while Linux got it on the 14th of February, 2013. As of October 2013, over 3000 games are now available to download through steam and there are 65 million Steam accounts. 75% of all digital PC games are downloaded through Steam.

Games:

Minecraft:
Markus "Notch" Persson began developing Minecraft independently while working for King.com and jAlbum. He was inspired to make Minecraft by games such as Dwarf Fortress, Dungeon Keeper and Infiniminer. Infiniminer especially influenced the gameplay as it introduced the concepts of the first-person view, blocky visuals and block building elements. However, Notch also wanted to add more RPG elements. Minecraft was released to the public on the 17th of May, 2009 in alpha. Although Notch originally didn't want to, he quit jAlbum in order to work of Minecraft full time, setting up Mojang in the process. In December 11, 2010, Minecraft entered Beta form and the full version was released on the 18th of November, 2011. On the 1st of December, 2011 Jens "Jeb" Bergensten took over as lead developer from Notch. Minecraft received widespread critical acclaim and is now on mobile devices as well as Xbox 360 and PS3. Read the reviews that both me and Satamer have done for it as well as my Video Game Character of the Month for more.

The Sims:
The Sims is a strategic life simulation video game that was developed by Maxis and published by EA in 2000. The gameplay involves players controlling the Sims in order to live out their lives to the full. There is a Live Mode which is the main mode of the game as well as Build Mode and Buy Mode which lets you renovate the house. The game is not an RPG and so the player controls the characters by telling them what to do rather than controlling them directly. Actions include, paying their bills, finding a job and getting into a relationship. The game has had seven expansion packs that all add more to the game as well as lots of spin offs and sequels. The game has the honour of being the bestselling PC game in history, beating the second-place holder of Myst.

Age of Empires:
Age of Empires (or Dawn of Man as it was known in development) is the first game that was developed by Ensemble Studios. It was inspired by the game Civilization and its historical setting came from it being more accessible to casual gamers as well as making it stand out from the other, more Sci-Fi RTS's. It was released on October 15 1997 in North America and on the 2nd of February, 1998 in the UK and was published by Microsoft. The game has featured a few expansion packs, sequels and spin offs. Please watch Satamer's video's on Youtube to get an idea of the gameplay.
