Walkthrough No. 2 Animal Crossing New Leaf - 3DS (7+)

This walkthrough is a walkthrough in the loosest sense. As Animal Crossing isn't a game you can walk through (is it even a game?) so I suppose that this is more than a tips and tricks section more than anything. But in the interest of keeping the amount of different types of things we do to a relative minimum I'll call it a walkthrough.
Warning: spoilers, obviously.

So first of is something that is new to the Animal Crossing series, the chance to unlock/buy completely new buildings for your village/dystopic hell-scape/bell business area.

Buildings:

Museum second floor: this new shop is allows you to get exclusive items (such as silver tools) and also rooms where you can exhibit your own items. It is unlocked by donating 20 items to the museum and one from each of four categories (fish, bugs, fossils and works of art.) You also have to speak to blathers for 14 days. Of course, you then have to buy it for 198,000 but nothing is free, I guess.

Brewster's Café: Brewster has always been one of my favourite Animal Crossing characters and I have fond memories of ordering coffee from him in Let's Go to the City. This time though it is even better, you get to work for him! Finally, the life sim catches up to real life and makes you get a job. About time. Anyway, back to how you unlock it. After getting the second floor of the museum, waiting a whole week and donating 50 items to the museum Blathers is seen thinking (for once) and will tell you about the café which you can then buy for a measly 298, 000 bells. It's for Brewster, people.

Kicks Shoe Shop: remember the skunk who only appeared on fair weather days in Let's Go to the City? He was a bit useless back then but now that you have grown a bit use for shoes actually comes into play. If you spend 8000 bells in the Able Sisters, then Kicks will open his own shop next door enabling you to change your shoes. Hooray!

Shampoodle Salon: I think that it's about time that the Able Sisters use their abandoned attic space that is above them, don't you? Of course you do. Wait another 10 days after getting Kicks and another 10,000 bells spent in either the Able Sisters or Kicks and then you will be able to change not only your hair but also your eye colour. I'm sick of being the same except for my clothes accessories and shoes, it's time for some real changes.

Leif''s Gardening Shop: to unlock a gardening shop owned by a forgetful sloth (only in Animal Crossing) you have to complete 30 of these actions: planting/ watering trees and flowers and pulling up weeds followed by waiting two days. That's about it. If only the rest was so easy.

The Dream Suite: poor Isabel (who is your dog secretary of course) always overworked by you, the selfish mayor. She even sleeps at her desk. Poor dog, humanoid secretary thing. But her terrible life does have its good points, for you that is. If you walk into the town hall at night (without another public works project on at that time) and catch her sleeping she will feel so embarrassed that she will give you the Dream Suite. This public works project is bought for 243,000 bells and enables you to go into other people's towns, or at least a saved version of the town which you cannot change. You can change your town and update your Dream World though.

Club LOL: a club isn't the first thing I would connect with the Animal Crossing series, a series dedicated to the quieter way of life but here it is and it works. Club LOL replaces The Roost and The Marquee from previous entries to the series and is unlocked in a completely different manner to the other buildings. After upgrading the Nookling's store once Dr Shrunk appears and asks you to collect 6 signatures from the residents of your town. Once this is done you get the Club on Main Street and can listen to K.K Slider and watch Dr Shrunks ridiculous performances. Good for you.

Katrina's Fortune Shop: hummm, ummmm, lummmm, summmm, dummmm BOOM! You will give me money!... Sorry, just something I felt like trying. This building is unlocked after having your fortune told 20 times by Katrina. Something that is completely unrelated to the chanting above. Sorry.

Reset Surveillance Centre: this shop is unlocked after quitting the game without saving for the first time. It is added to the Public Work Projects for 368,000 bells and allows you to see Mr. Resseti and his brother Don. Great. They will also come and 'talk' to you if you quit without saving. There are certain other bonuses to getting this building though such as silver shovels and a picture of the brothers. Now, SCRAM!

Police Station: this village needs some law. Those animals have been plotting something, I can tell. It's the way they are always nice to me, giving me furniture and clothes for free. Its... suspicious. The fact that the villagers themselves ask for a Police Station just proves it. The Police Station holds the two most fearless police officers ever, Booker and Copper, made famous after defeating the candy robbers in the theme park of Nintendo Land. It is unlocked after a villager requests it and you pay 264, 000 bells and there are two types: modern and classic of which you are allowed only one. Modern holds the cruel Copper and classic holds the fierce Booker. Inside you can get items from the lost and found or hide out against vicious villager plots. It's your choice.

Campsite: great, more animal villagers, just what I always wanted. The campsite is available from the beginning and costs 59,800 bells to complete. It enables a non-resident villager to come over and if you have enough space, to ask to move in permanently.

Well, that's all the buildings now onto the upgrades of which there are only some for the Nooklings so, yeah.

Nookling Junction: the original. The first. The worst. Nothing to say here.

T and T Mart: the next upgrade. You get this one after spending 10,000 bells on your house mortgage and 12,000 bells in Nookling Junction. You also need to wait 10 days after your towns creation, whatever name that may be. It enables you to buy more items as well as use the catalogue to order items that you have owned before and to be able to unlock a gardening store owned by a sloth with amnesia. Well done.

Super T and T: to get Super T and T you must have spent 25,000 bells in the T and T Mart and have waited for 10 days since both the T and T Mart and the Gardening Centre were open. Yet again you get more room and some new items including melody paper and wall hanging furniture.

T.I.Y: T.I.Y store is the next upgrade in the series of Nookling upadates. To get it you have to have spent 50,000 bells in the T.I.Y store and have waited for 21 days. Leif also gets an upgrade joining with the T.I.Y store ad getting more space and items.

T and T Emporium: this is the big one. The holy grail of all Nookling stores. This is... very had to get. To get the T and T Emporium, you have to spend 100,000 bells in T.I.Y and have T.I.Y open for 30 days. Oh yeah, and you need to have gotten at least four satisfactory fashion ratings from Gracie who has started to visit your town. But the rewards are huge. T and T Emporium have two more floors added to the normal one (ground- normal items, 1st- furniture, 2nd- Gracie's premium items.) It also looks fancy.

Tools:
For all you collectors, diggers and gardeners out there this is for you.

Nets: ah the humble bug net. So helpful, so traditional so... basic. Now its time for the reign of silver and gold.
Silver: this one is easy to get well it is after you get the museum second floor (look in the first section of the walkthrough for more info) and donating at least 30 bugs. It's purpose is to increase the radius of your capturing area. Without increasing the radius of the actual net of course.
Gold: this one is a lot harder and is only really used to get bells and to win bug catching contests. The reason for this is that, to unlock it you have to have completed the whole of the bug album. The whole thing! And then you have to wait for the next bug catching contest and ask Nat, the judge that eats your bugs when you give it to him, you know which one I'm talking about, then he'll give you the golden bug net! For some reason bugs are less suspicious of gold things and so let you get closer before flying/ walking/ sliming off.

Fishing Rod: ah, the alluring fishing rod. So rewarding, so wooden, so... un-alluring actually.
Silver: this one is exactly the same as the bug net except for fish. It has a different upgrade though as it has a better lure meaning that the fish stay on for longer although I don't think this has anything to with it being silver.
Gold: like the bug net except that you have to catch every fish and ocean fish (but not deep sea fish, through the use of diving) and talk to Chip the beaver rather than Nat the lizard. The fish stay on for even longer, isn't gold a great metal.

Shovel: dig, dig, dig, dig, diggin, diggin all day long.
Silver: to get the silver shovel, you don't need to find silver to put on your shovel but instead buy it from the museum second floor after donating another 15 fossils. For some reason this enables you to get ores from money rocks but you know, free bells.
Gold: buy fifty bags of fertiliser from Leif and he'll give you a golden shovel. This guy really doesn't understand value. This shovel lets you plant money trees AND fertiliser will work better. Leif would be proud.

Axe: for all of your lumberjack needs.

Silver: more durable AND creates rare tree stump patterns. Isn't silver great? (Warning, silver does not create different tree stump patterns in real life but I do hear that ruby might). To get it you have to purchase it from the Island shop for 8 medals.
Gold: Leif loves to give gold away and will give you a golden axe after you buy fifty tree saplings which you can then cut down again. Hooray! The gold axe will never break and gives you another tree stump pattern!

Slingshot: the bane of balloons but not much else.
Silver: this fires two shots at once, increasing the range of shots. To get it you have to pop the present with two balloons attached instead of one and so just requires a bit of a time than skill.
Gold: you know the saying three is better than one well that is definitely attributed here because the golden slingshot fires three shots instead of two! To get it you have to pop 16 balloons and then pop the special present with 3 golden balloons. There is a catch though, if you miss this special presents then the counter resets and you have to pop the 16 balloons all over again. Tip: popping a balloon with a bug net while on a cliff also counts as popping it.

Watering Can: the watering can. The king of water.
Silver: Leif has run out of gold and has turned to silver, well these are tough times we are living in. Buy 50 flowers from Leif and this is what you get. It has a larger watering radius which means it takes slightly less time to water those meadows you have been planting. Come on, we know you have.
Gold: perfection, the ultimate goal. The reward? A golden watering can. To get a perfect town status follow Isabel's Citizen Satisfaction tips. The golden watering can lets you water all nine spots around you. Now this would have been helpful to get the perfect town rating don't you think?

Tips n Tricks:

Easy Bells: for all you greedy so and so's out there, here is some tips on easy bells.

The Island: this is a new and easy way for you to make bells on New Leaf. Once you have gotten the Island Pass from Tortimer after paying off your first debt of 39,800 bells then you can travel to this island paradise for a mere 1000 bells (believe me, this is a tiny amount compared to what you will be earning). Once there, you can catch rare fish and bugs to bring back home and sell for high prices. And did I mention that this is all year round?

Perfect and Foreign Fruit: fruit has always been a good way to make money in the Animal Crossing series and this game is no different. Your native fruit (the one you get at the beginning) has a chance to turn into a perfect fruit which means a shiny colour and better price. This is good by itself of course but its when you go to another person's town that it really starts to bring in the bells as (if the other person's native fruit is different to your perfect fruit) you will get five times as much (3000, rather than 600). This also works with normal fruit although not as highly priced.

Fossils: this is pretty basic. After donating your fossils to the museum, the doubles can be sold for a high price.

The Money and Ore Rocks: these rocks are special. Every day one of your rocks will give you bells if hit with a shovel or an axe (a silver shovel gives it the chance to drop ores, more on that soon). As soon as you hit the rock an unseen timer begins and so you have only got so long to knock out the bells (consisting of 100, 200, 300, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 bells). Make sure all eight spaces around the rock are clear as otherwise the bells won't drop in that space meaning less of them. One tip is to dig two holes diagonally behind the player (one on each side of the player) so as to disable knock back.
Ore: everyday there will be one fake rock in your village, hit it with your shovel to break it and get an ore. All ores give you 2000 bells at Re Tail except for the Silver nugget which gives you 3000 and the Gold Nugget that gives you 4000.

Money Tree: the money tree is an extra little thing that takes a lot of bells and time to do. To get it you have to bury some bells with a golden shovel and you will have a certain percentage of chance that corresponds with the bells burried e.g 20,000 bells equals 20%, 30,000 bells equals 30% etc.

High Price Items: if you read the sign next to the Re Tail then it will tell you a specific item (yellow butterfly) or a type of item (hats). If you sell this item, then you will get twice as many bells! I'm not sure why they would want to recycle a yellow butterfly but there you go. A good idea would be to store valuable items such as thrones and crowns and sell them when they become a high price item for lots of bells.

Turnip Market: like its predecessors this game has a turnip market. Much like shares you can buy them from Joan on a Sunday morning and check with Reese for prices throughout the week. If you're lucky you could get a huge profit. A tip would be to check with your friends about their turnip prices and, if better, sell there. Warning, does not actually represent the stock market in anyway. Do not try to sell turnips to big businesses.

Ordinances: as mayor, you have the power to enforce the law on your citezens. Out of the three that you could choose (I'm ignoring the pretty town for now for obvious reasons the main one is big bells as it increases the selling price of your items. Sadly, it costs 20,000 to buy and increases the price on items you buy as well (one tip is to use it to upgrade the Nooklings as you will have to pay more and so can do it quicker. Another tip is to turn it on and sell all your stuff and the turn it off, which is free, so that you can buy things, if you want.) it also enables two high price items a day. Or you can turn to the time ordinances which are either early bird or night owl, pretty self-explanatory there. You use this so that you can shops spend open longer so that you can sell more but be warned that these cost 20,000 as well.

Extra tips:

Shake Trees: if you do this you can get some bells or furniture (two a day) which you can sell for extra bells.

Hit Flying Presents: hit the present. Get the item. Sell the Item. Easy.

Fortune Cookies: these are obtained by using play coins gathered by walking with your 3DS in your pocket (or just tapping it against something) and give you special, Nintendo themed items that you can sell for bells.

Lost and Found: after building a Police Station (find out how earlier in the post) you can get lost and found items which you can sell for more bells. If you want to benefit from others misfortunes that is.

Luck: either increase your Feng Shui or wear the good luck charm given to you by Katrina. This will enable you to get more bells from trees, rocks, villagers etc.

Recycling is good: make sure to sell your items at Re Tail as you will get a 20% increase in bells than if you sell at the Nooklings.

Public Work Projects:
New to Animal Crossing and only available to the mayor. Enjoy the power. Some of the names may differ in your game due to your region as well as my sources, for example Japanese projects may be called Zen.
