Video Game Character of the Month
December 2019
Video Game Character of the Month
Games Apps and Reviews
Overview:
That’s right people, in a form of shameless self-promotion never before seen, the Video Game Character of the Month is being awarded to… The Video Game Character of the Month award! Please don’t hold your applause.
And now for a little bit of info on the Video Game Character of the Month Award:

There have been 76 awards given out
That means that the award has been going for 76 months
And that is over six years!
They are always released on midnight of the first of the month
The most popular recipient of the award is Waluigi with 2371 views
This is also the fourth most viewed post on the blog
The most awarded franchise is Mario, with four awards
This is followed by Kingdom Hearts, Pokémon and Overwatch with three each
Satamer has awarded 31 characters with awards, Oli has awarded 1 character and I, Harry, have awarded 44 characters

Origin of The Video Game Character Month:
The origin of the Video Game Character of the Month Award is shrouded in mystery. Some say that the first award was given to Steve, the first-named virtual stone to be passed around by children in the distant age of yore (we, of course, know that the first award was given to Mario in the distant age of the 1st August 2013). It began as a way to award the Games Apps and Reviews team’s favourite gaming characters, and legendary gaming icons, but soon developed into a little encyclopaedia of gaming knowledge. To begin with, the award was meant to be given to a character linked mostly with Nintendo, then PlayStation, then Microsoft, then apps and then retro consoles, but this pattern only occurred twice (with a small break to give Jingle the Christmas Award).
The first Video Game Character of the Month Award was actually given to Link in 2011, back on the original, unpublished Games Apps and Reviews website (then linked much more closely to Nintendo) but it took until August 2014 for Link to finally be given an official VGCOTM Award.

Evolution of The Video Game Character Month:
The Video Game Character of the Month Award has stayed in pretty much the same format since the beginning (although the list of games has become less detailed as what qualified as a character appearing in a game has become more complicated). The first major evolution was the spin-off of The 12 Gens of Gaming: a brief history of gaming dealing with the first eight generations of consoles, PCs, handhelds and smartphones, as well as an, increasingly inaccurate, prediction of generation nine.
The second major change was my relinquishing control of the feature in December 2014 and allowing, only somewhat regretfully, Satamer and Oli to write for the Award. And it’s a good thing they helped (and particularly Satamer as the stats at the top show) as otherwise I don’t think the Award would have survived. And then how would we award our gaming icons? By just playing their games? We all know that’s not enough.

Games:
Because The Video Game Character of the Month Award: The Game is stuck in development hell (so far in fact that it’s never even been thought up), there isn’t really a list of games to give you. Therefore, you can have a list of links to previous Awards, so that you can live or relive the glory for yourselves:
This list will be going up in subsequent days.

That’s all for this month but, as always, don’t hesitate to comment if I’ve made a mistake, missed something out (although this should be harder for me to do for this particular award) or you have a suggestion for a future winner of the award, or if you have a particular memory of the award that you want to talk about.

Goodbye for now,
Harry Penwell
